How can I apply for citizenship?
To apply for citizenship in Texas, you must first be a lawful, permanent resident of the United States. To become a permanent resident, you must have a valid immigrant visa and apply for a permanent resident card. To get an immigrant visa, you must either have a close family member who is a U.S. citizen or be sponsored by a U.S. employer or relative. Once you become a permanent resident, you can apply for naturalization or citizenship through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. To start the process, you must complete Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. Part of the form will ask you questions about your background, including your criminal history and employment history. You will also need to provide proof of your lawful permanent resident status, such as a valid green card or a record of a past application for a green card that was approved. You will also need to provide two passport-style photographs, proof of financial stability (for example, pay stubs or bank statements), and your Social Security number. If you meet all of the naturalization eligibility requirements, USCIS will schedule an appointment to take your biometrics and to interview you about your answers in the N-400 application. During the interview, you must demonstrate an understanding of U.S. history and government and be able to speak English. If your application is approved, you will be given a date to attend a naturalization or citizenship ceremony. At the ceremony, you will be required to take an Oath of Allegiance to the United States before being granted full citizenship.
