What is the difference between a green card and work authorization?

A green card, officially known as a Permanent Resident Card, is a document that shows a person is a lawful permanent resident of the United States. It grants the holder the right to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis. Work authorization is a document that allows a foreign national to work in the United States on a temporary basis. Work authorization is usually granted for a predetermined amount of time and is usually renewed or extended. In Texas, a green card holder may work without requiring additional work authorization. Upon admission to the U.S., green card holders are automatically eligible to work. Work authorization, on the other hand, is required for foreign nationals who do not hold a green card. This includes temporary workers, students, and those on certain types of visas. In Texas, foreign nationals who are authorized to work must have an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) or a work visa. In summary, a green card grants a person the right to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis, while a work authorization document grants a foreign national the right to work in the United States on a temporary basis. A green card holder does not need to apply for work authorization, while a foreign national without a green card must apply for a work authorization document.
