How do I apply for temporary protected status?
In Massachusetts, applying for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is a multi-step process that must be completed to be considered for protection. The first step is to file an application with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). You must provide evidence that you have been continuously physically present in the U.S. since the designated time period and that you meet the other eligibility requirements. You will also be required to provide biometric information, such as fingerprints. Once USCIS receives your application, they will review it and make a decision. Depending on the country of origin, you may receive a decision in a few months or up to a year. If your application is approved, you will receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and a temporary social security number. With an EAD, you may be able to obtain a driver’s license and open a bank account. TPS is a temporary form of protection and will not lead to permanent residence. In order to remain qualified for TPS, you must renewal your EAD before it expires. Additionally, you must continue to meet all of the specific eligibility requirements to maintain your status. Before applying, you should consult a qualified immigration attorney or accredited representative to make sure that you meet the eligibility requirements and understand the process. Help can also be obtained from USCIS by calling the National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283 or a local USCIS office.
