What are the procedures for filing an application for asylum?

Filing an application for asylum in Massachusetts is a multi-step process. The first step is to complete Form I-589, Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal. This form must be completed in its entirety and include the applicant’s biographical information, asylum claim, and any supporting documentation. Supporting documents can include, but are not limited to, birth certificates, passports, affidavits, and any other documentation related to the asylum claim. Once the form is completed and the supporting documentation is gathered an asylum applicant must print two copies of the form and file them with the nearest United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office. At the same time, the applicant should submit copies of the supporting documents. Once the form and documents are received, the applicant will receive a receipt notice and a biometrics appointment letter. The next step in the process is to attend the biometric appointment. At this appointment, the applicant will provide fingerprints, photographs, and a signature that will be used to verify identity. Once the biometric appointment is complete the USCIS will review the application and will either approve or deny the asylum claim. In addition to filing the asylum application, all applicants for asylum must attend an interview at the USCIS office. During the interview, an asylum officer will review the application and supporting documentation and ask questions to evaluate the merits of the asylum claim. Once the application and interview are completed, the applicant will be contacted by the USCIS with either a decision on the application or a request for additional information. If the application is approved, the applicant can begin the process of officially becoming an asylum seeker in Massachusetts.
