What is the process for filing an application for Temporary Protected Status (TPS)?
The process of applying for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in Michigan begins by filing an application with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The application must be completed and signed by the applicant. The applicant must also submit evidence of their identity and nationality, as well as evidence that they have been residing in the United States for at least six months. Along with the application, the applicant must submit supporting documents that demonstrate eligibility and establish that they have been a resident of the states for the required duration. The applicant must pay a filing fee, which is currently $50 for a TPS application. This fee is nonrefundable, even if the application is denied. The applicant must also sign the form certifying that the information they have provided is true and complete to the best of their knowledge. Once the application is complete, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will review the application and determine if the applicant is eligible for TPS. If the applicant is approved, they will be granted a period of temporary protection from removal from the United States and will be allowed to work in the country legally. The period of temporary protection can last up to 18 months, and is renewable.
