What is the process for filing an application for naturalization?
The process of filing an application for naturalization in Michigan is relatively straightforward. The first step is to complete and submit Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. This form can be obtained from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security website, or through a Michigan-based immigration lawyer. On Form N-400, the applicant will provide various personal "biographic information" such as name, date of birth, and address and also detail whether the applicant has any relatives who are U.S. citizens. The applicant will also need to provide two passport-style photos with the form. Once the Form N-400 is completed, the applicant has to submit the form and the application fee to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. At this point, USCIS makes a preliminary determination as to whether the applicant is eligible to apply for naturalization. After the eligibility has been confirmed, the applicant has to attend a biometrics appointment where a set of fingerprints will be taken. The fingerprint results will be checked against various criminal databases. This step can take up to three months to process. After the fingerprinting has been completed, the applicant is invited to attend an interview and take an English and civics test. If the applicant passes both the interview and the tests, they will be invited to attend a swearing-in ceremony at the nearest U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office. It is during this ceremony that the applicant is officially granted U.S. citizenship. The entire process for filing an application for naturalization can take anywhere from 6-12 months, or longer depending on the circumstances.
