What is the process for filing an application for naturalization?
The process for filing an application for naturalization in West Virginia begins by submitting an Application for Naturalization (Form N-400) to USCIS. This form is available on the USCIS website and is used to document a person’s eligibility for naturalization. To qualify, a person must have been a lawful permanent resident of the United States for at least five years. They must also demonstrate physical presence in the United States for a certain length of time and have a basic understanding of English, civics and the U.S. Constitution. After USCIS receives the Application for Naturalization, the applicant will be scheduled for a biometrics appointment. During this appointment, USCIS will collect the applicant’s fingerprints and take their photograph. The next step in the naturalization process is being interviewed by a USCIS officer. The interviewer will ask the applicant questions about the application and their knowledge of U.S. history and English. If the applicant is approved, USCIS will schedule them for an Oath of Allegiance ceremony. At this ceremony, the applicant must take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States and renounce any previous foreign allegiances. After this, the applicant will be granted U.S. citizenship.
