How do I obtain an Employment Authorization Document (EAD)?
In order to obtain an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) in Idaho, you must be a foreign national, non-U.S. citizen, lawfully admitted into the U.S. for work or study, must have a valid U.S. visa, and must be sponsored by the U.S. government or a private organization. You must submit a Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, with the fee and supporting documents to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The form must be accompanied by a copy of your passport, visa, and other documents. Depending on the situation, additional documents may be required, such as evidence of your lawful immigration status. Once you have submitted all the required documents and the fee, USCIS will process your application. This process can take up to 90 days. If approved, you will receive a new EAD card within 7-10 business days. Once you have your EAD card, you may use it to work in the United States for the employer sponsored by your visa. The card will have an expiration date that you must remember to renew before in order to continue working lawfully in the United States. It is important to remember that an EAD is not a visa and you will still need to be authorized to use it. Additionally, you must show proof of lawful employment authorization to your employer prior to beginning work in the United States. If you are found to be working without proper documentation, you could face deportation, fines, and/or other consequences.
