What is the process for obtaining a green card?

For someone hoping to obtain a green card, otherwise known as a permanent resident card or an immigrant visa, in the state of Idaho, the process begins with an application. The first step is typically filing what is known as an I-130 form, which is a petition for an alien relative. This form needs to be filed by a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident related to the individual filing for the green card. This form proves the familial relationship between the petitioner and the applicant. The applicant must then fill out an I-485 form which is an application for adjustment of status. This form allows the applicant to request permission to stay and work in the United States as a permanent resident, and they will also need to provide evidence to support the application. This form must also be accompanied with an application fee, photo identification, and documentation of any existing immigration status. The applicant must then attend an interview and biometrics appointment at the local U.S. consulate or embassy to complete the green card application process. The applicant may be required to pass certain medical examinations and provide additional information and documents, if needed. Once this is complete, the application will be reviewed for approval. If approved, the individual will receive their permanent resident card within 4-6 months. If denied, the applicant can still file an appeal if they feel that the decision was wrong. Following this process is the only way to obtain a green card in Idaho.
