What is a deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA)?

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a policy created by the Obama Administration that allows some undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as minors to be protected from deportation. In order to be eligible for DACA, individuals must have been under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012, must have been in the United States since 2007, and must have had no criminal record. Additionally, applicants must have either attended school, been honorably discharged from the military, or possess a GED. Once an individual is granted DACA status, they are allowed to live and work in the United States legally. Although DACA does not provide a path to citizenship, it does provide certain protections from deportation and allows for certain work permits. In Kansas, DACA recipients are eligible to obtain driver’s licenses and attend state colleges. DACA is continually being challenged in court and its future is uncertain. Despite this, it continues to provide an invaluable opportunity to those who are undocumented and are in need of legal protection. DACA is an important step in providing immigrants with the opportunity to live, work, and study in the United States.
