What is a humanitarian parole?

A humanitarian parole is a temporary immigration status granted by the U.S. government on a case-by-case basis. In Hawaii, it allows an individual to enter the United States for a temporary period of time due to an urgent humanitarian reason or for a significant public benefit. The individual must demonstrate a compelling reason for their stay in the U.S. and must be able to prove they are not a threat to national security. The most common reason for the granting of a humanitarian parole is to allow an individual to enter the United States to receive medical treatment that is not available in their home country. In Hawaii, the parolee must also demonstrate that they have the financial resources necessary to fund their medical care while in the U.S. Other reasons for humanitarian parole may include visiting family or providing assistance in a community organization or project. Humanitarian parole is granted on a discretionary basis by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). It may be granted for a period of up to one year, but may be extended for additional periods of time up to a maximum of three years for medical parole cases. The parole may be revoked at any time if the parolee violates the parole terms or fails to meet the requirements of their parole status.
