What is the difference between a non-immigrant visa and a green card?

A non-immigrant visa and a green card are two different types of immigration documents granted by the U.S. government, in Washington State. Non-immigrant visas are temporary and are issued for a variety of reasons, such as visiting the U.S. for educational and travel purposes. The type of non-immigrant visa typically depends upon the individual’s purpose for coming to the country, such as a student, tourist, or work or business visitor. A green card, or lawful permanent resident card, is a document that allows an individual to live and work in the U.S. as a permanent legal resident, and is commonly known as getting “green card status”. Entitlement to a green card is based upon being sponsored either by a family member who is already a legal permanent resident or U.S. citizen, or by an employer. It is also possible to obtain a green card through refugee or asylum status. Unlike non-immigrant visas, green card holders are not required to renew their status and are allowed to stay indefinitely in the U.S.
