What are the different types of labor unions?
Labor unions are organized groups of workers, typically within a particular industry or organization, that join together to protect and promote their collective interests. Unions negotiate with employers to secure better wages, working conditions, and benefits for their members. In New Mexico, labor unions are regulated by federal and state labor and employment laws and are protected by the National Labor Relations Act. The two main types of labor unions in New Mexico are craft unions and industrial unions. Craft unions are unions that are organized and divided by the trades or crafts of their members. This type of union focuses on the specifics of the industry, such as wages, hours, and safety standards, and also works to ensure that each member is given the best, most skilled job for their expertise. Industrial unions, on the other hand, are composed of all workers in a particular industry, regardless of their trade or skill. These types of unions are more focused on the rights of all workers in a particular industry, such as fair pay and job security. Industrial unions work to ensure that a uniform wage is set for all workers in the industry, regardless of skill, and strive to protect workers from exploitation by employers. In addition, there are public sector unions such as the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the National Education Association (NEA) which represent the interests of public sector workers, including teachers, firefighters, police officers, and other government employees. No matter the type of labor union, all New Mexico labor unions are protected by the National Labor Relations Act and seek to ensure that all workers are treated equitably and have access to job security and fair wages.
