How do labor laws protect wages and hours?

Labor laws in Maryland protect wages and hours by setting standards for fair wages and fair work hours. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is the federal law that requires employers to pay employees a minimum wage, and sets maximum hours for overtime pay. The FLSA sets the minimum wage for Maryland at $9.25 per hour, and overtime pay must be at least 1.5 times the regular hourly rate after 40 hours of work in one week. The Maryland Wage and Hour Law of 1939 also protects workers from being paid for less than the minimum wage, or for less than the amount promised. This law also allows workers to collect the difference between what they have been paid and what they should have been paid, plus interest. Additionally, the Maryland Living Wage Law sets a minimum hourly wage for workers in certain industries. For example, if an employer in the childcare or home health care field has more than 10 employees, their minimum wage must be set at $10.10 per hour. Finally, the Maryland Wage Payment and Collection Act ensures that all wages earned must be paid in full in cash or by a check. This act also states that an employer cannot make any deductions from an employee’s wages without the employee’s written consent for any reason. By setting standards for fair wages and hours, labor laws in Maryland protect workers’ rights.
