Who is entitled to inherit property?

In Virginia, the people who are entitled to inherit property are defined by the laws of intestate succession. Under Virginia law, intestate succession is the process by which property is passed on to heirs when someone dies without a will. The people entitled to the property are determined by both how closely they are related to the deceased person and what kind of property it is. First, the descendants of the deceased person, such as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, are entitled to inherit any type of property that the deceased owned. If no descendants are alive, then the parents, siblings, and other relatives of the deceased will be entitled to the property. If there are no surviving relatives, then the state of Virginia may be entitled to the property. Lastly, if the deceased owned property jointly with someone else, then the person who is still alive will be the person that inherits it. In summary, in Virginia, the people who are entitled to inherit property are determined by the degree of the relationship to the deceased person, the type of property, and the ownership of the property. Generally, those related most closely to the deceased person, such as children and grandchildren, are entitled to the property first, followed by other relatives and then the state of Virginia.
