What is the difference between public and private international law?

Public international law is a set of rules and regulations that are accepted by a majority of states as governing their behavior towards one another. For example, it sets out the rules for the conduct of war, trade, and international relations in general. It is usually established through multilateral treaties or international conventions. Private international law, on the other hand, deals with legal issues that arise between two or more countries, between private entities such as companies or individuals, or involving their cross-border activities. It covers issues such as contracts, marriage, inheritance, copyright, or other intellectual property issues. It is generally established through local state laws and private agreements between parties. In New Hampshire, private international law is governed by the Uniform International Commercial practices law (UNICPL) and the Uniform Choice of Law Rules (UCOLR). These two systems provide a uniform set of rules that are accepted across states to ensure consistency and fairness in transactions. The UNICPL sets out rules for how contracts should be enforced and interpreted, while UCOLR sets out rules for determining which state law should govern a given dispute. This helps protect parties to a contractual or other dispute between multiple jurisdictions from having to abide by conflicting laws.
