What is a treaty?

A treaty is an international agreement between two or more countries that is governed by international law. Treaties are also known as conventions, covenants, protocols, and charters. Treaties create legal obligations between the countries that have agreed to it. In South Dakota, treaties are important because they provide a mechanism for nations to come together and share common goals and objectives. Treaties also help to foster cooperation between countries and can even help protect citizens from harm. For example, when two countries sign a treaty, they agree to not engage in activities that would cause harm to each other’s citizens. Treaties can cover any number of topics and can include more than just two countries. They can relate to matters of security, trade, commerce, or human rights. The United Nations is one of the most important sources of international law treaties. Treaties are binding and become the law of the land once they are ratified by the governments of the countries that are party to the treaty. This means that, unlike laws within a single country, treaties generally require the consent of all parties before any changes can be made. This ensures that all the countries involved are committed to the conditions of the treaty.
