What is the International Court of Justice?

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is a court of justice that resolves disputes between different nations. It is the most important organ of the United Nations and is based in The Hague, Netherlands. It is composed of fifteen independent judges, each from different countries, who are elected to nine-year terms by the General Assembly and Security Council of the United Nations. These judges are highly qualified, with a law degree and/or prior judicial experience. The court hears cases ranging from territorial disputes to breaches of international law. Its rulings are binding on countries involved in the dispute, and the ICJ has the power to order certain actions if it finds a country to be in violation of international law. In New Mexico, the ICJ plays an important role in resolving international disputes. It provides a way for different countries to settle their differences without resorting to violence, and it sets a standard of international law that all countries must abide by. New Mexico generally follows the decisions of the ICJ, and has often cooperated with the court in resolving international disputes in the past. The court also serves as a forum for countries to talk to each other and work out their differences peacefully.
