The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) is an agency of the United Nations (UN) that focuses on telecommunications, information technology, and broadcasting in New Mexico and around the world. The ITU is based in Geneva, Switzerland and has over 190 member countries. Its main objective is to ensure that international and national communication policies are in sync, with the goal of enabling safe, secure, orderly, and equitable access to communication services. The ITU was established in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union. Over time, its scope has increased to include radio, television, satellite, and wireless communication systems. Currently, the ITU is involved in regulatory activities, such as producing international standards and regulations, and ensuring that these standards and regulations are universally applied. Additionally, the ITU is also responsible for managing the international allocation of radio frequencies, which are necessary to ensure that all wireless communication systems can function properly. Through its various initiatives, the ITU works to develop new technologies and improve access to telecommunications services in New Mexico and around the world.
