What is the International Labour Organization (ILO)?

The International Labour Organization (ILO) is an international body that sets standards, promotes the rights of workers, and advances social justice worldwide. Established in 1919, it is one of the oldest and most important of the United Nations’ specialized agencies. The ILO is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and is composed of 187 national members, including North Carolina. The ILO is responsible for setting standards for labor rights, health and safety, and working conditions. The standards are implemented through conventions, or treaties, which all ILO member states are expected to ratify and abide by. The ILO conventions cover a wide variety of issues including freedom of association, the right to collective bargaining, workplace safety, and the abolishment of child labor. In addition, the ILO also publishes research and offers technical assistance to help countries advance their labor conditions. The ILO was created to promote social justice around the world, primarily through the protection of human rights and the improvement of working conditions. Aside from setting standards, the ILO also works to foster dialogue between social partners, or employers and workers, to promote cooperation in resolving labor disputes. It also works to combat poverty and gender inequality, promote the idea of sustainable development, and strengthen marginalized communities. Through its global mandate, the ILO works to ensure that everyone, regardless of their nationality or social class, can benefit from the same rights and standards. North Carolina, as a member of the ILO, is working to protect the rights of workers, and uphold commitments to international labor standards.
