What is the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)?

The International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is an international human rights treaty adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989. The CRC is the first legally binding international document to incorporate the full range of children’s human rights, including civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. The CRC establishes the rights of every child to protection from all forms of physical or mental violence, to education, to health care, and to live in a secure, loving environment. It also sets out the obligations of governments in protecting and respecting these rights. Furthermore, the CRC provides for measures to promote the prevention of violence and to ensure that the best interests of the child are taken into account in all matters that affect them. The CRC has been ratified by all United Nations member states, including New Mexico. All countries that are party to the Convention are legally bound to ensure that children’s rights are respected and that they are not subjected to any kind of violence or discrimination. Ratifying the CRC thus represents a commitment by New Mexico to the protection and promotion of the rights of all children.
