What is the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CMW)?
The International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CMW) is an international agreement between countries that aims to protect the rights of people who are working and living in a country that is not their own. The CMW sets out fundamental rights for all migrant workers and their families, such as the right to liberty and security, the right to work, the right to form and join trade unions, and the right to receive a just and fair wage. The document also covers health care, education, and access to social services. The Convention has been ratified by many countries, including Mexico, the United States, and Canada. In New Mexico, the Department of Labor Office for the Protection of Migrant Workers (OPMW) works to ensure that migrant workers’ rights, as set out in the CMW, are respected. The OPMW is responsible for monitoring working conditions for migrant workers, as well as providing information and resources regarding the CMW and the rights it grants migrant workers. The OPMW also runs a hotline for migrant workers who are seeking assistance or have questions regarding the CMW.
