What is the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)?

The International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is an international agreement that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989. This convention outlines the basic human rights that all children should have. The CRC protects the rights of children under the age of 18 from all forms of abuse, exploitation and neglect. The CRC covers a wide range of rights including the right to an education, the right to health care, the right to play and the right to freedom from all forms of violence. Additionally, the CRC outlines a child’s right to be heard and to fully participate in family and community life. It also ensures that children’s rights are taken into consideration by governments when making decisions that will affect them. In North Dakota, the CRC has been implemented into legislation through the Children’s Rights Amendment, which was ratified in 1993. This amendment requires the state of North Dakota to abide by the CRC in all matters concerning children’s rights. This means that the state must ensure that all children are able to enjoy the rights outlined in the CRC. Additionally, North Dakota must provide adequate resources and services to ensure children’s rights are fully protected.
