What is the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)?

The International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is an international agreement that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989. The state has an obligation to ensure that children’s best interests are taken into account, to ensure that children’s rights are properly respected, and to ensure that children are not discriminated against. In the United States, South Dakota is one of the states that has ratified the Convention. This means that the state has adopted the Convention and is legally bound to observe its provisions. South Dakota has a legal obligation to ensure that the rights of the child are respected and upheld, as set out in the Convention.
