What is the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)?

The International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is an international agreement that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989. The Convention contains 54 articles that focus on the protection and promotion of the rights of children. It states that countries must recognize the right of every child to a safe and healthy environment, the right to education, the right to participate in cultural activities, the right to express their opinions, the right to be protected from all forms of abuse and exploitation, the right to have access to healthcare and all other basic needs, and the right to not be discriminated against based on age, race, ethnicity, language, or other characteristics. The Convention also sets out duties for the States Parties. This means that countries have a duty to protect, respect, and implement the rights as stated in the Convention and to take all necessary and appropriate measures to ensure that these rights are not violated. The state has an obligation to ensure that children’s best interests are taken into account, to ensure that children’s rights are properly respected, and to ensure that children are not discriminated against. In the United States, South Dakota is one of the states that has ratified the Convention. This means that the state has adopted the Convention and is legally bound to observe its provisions. South Dakota has a legal obligation to ensure that the rights of the child are respected and upheld, as set out in the Convention.
