What is the International Law of Humanitarian Intervention?

International Law of Humanitarian Intervention is a concept of the international community that allows for nations to intervene in the affairs of another nation, in order to stop human rights abuses or catastrophic humanitarian disasters. In this form of intervention, the intervening countries do not seek to overthrow the existing government, nor do they necessarily seek to gain economic or political control. Rather, their goal is to prevent the suffering that would ensue if the human rights violations or humanitarian disaster were to continue. In Florida, International Law of Humanitarian Intervention is regulated by the United Nations. Under this law, member states of the UN can appeal to the UN Security Council for authorization to intervene in a sovereign nation in order to prevent human rights abuses or alleviate a humanitarian disaster. The intervention can take various forms, including economic sanctions, diplomatic intervention, and military intervention. The International Law of Humanitarian Intervention is an important tool for nations to use in order to protect their citizens from human rights abuses and humanitarian disasters. Despite this, however, there has been much controversy surrounding the law. As such, it is important for Florida citizens to be aware of this law in order to understand the full implications of its use.
