What is the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)?

The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is a United Nations Convention that was established in 1979. The Convention is considered to be an international bill of rights for women, and is the most comprehensive human rights treaty dedicated to the rights of women and girls. The Convention states that discrimination against women is a violation of their human rights and denies them the opportunity to realize their potential. The Convention promotes gender equality by setting a minimum standard of rights that all countries must adhere to. It calls for the elimination of discrimination in all government laws, policies, and practices. Some of the rights recognized in the Convention include the rights to participate in public life, the right to work, the right to education, and the right to enjoy equal pay. Though the Convention has been ratified by 179 countries, the United States has yet to ratify it. The Convention has had an influence on U.S. law though, as some of its provisions have been incorporated into legislation at the state level. In Florida, there is a bill called The Florida CEDAW Act in the State Legislature that proposes to implement the rights enumerated in the Convention into Florida state law. If the bill passes, it will be the first state in the United States to recognize the rights in the CEDAW Convention.
