What is the International Law of Humanitarian Intervention?
The International Law of Humanitarian Intervention is an international law that allows some type of intervention within the borders of a sovereign state if it is deemed necessary to protect human rights. This type of intervention is separate from the traditional international law that states that no state has the right to intervene within the affairs of another state. Humanitarian intervention can take many forms, from offering aid in times of crisis, to the use of military forces to protect people from violence or systematic discrimination. In order for it to take effect, the situation in a state must rise to a certain level of severity and the intervention must be considered legitimate. The United Nations Security Council must approve any action that is deemed to be a humanitarian intervention, and it has the authority to enforce international laws. In The Washington area, humanitarian intervention has been used on a few occasions when the situation warranted such action. For example, in 2017, the United States deployed military forces in Somalia to help protect the Somali government from a militant group. In order for humanitarian intervention to be successful, it is important to get support from the international community and for the action to be deemed legitimate. While it is a powerful tool, it is important to remember that it should only be used as a last resort when other forms of intervention have failed.
