What is the International Law of State Responsibility for Internationally Wrongful Acts?
The International Law of State Responsibility for Internationally Wrongful Acts is an important concept of International Law which seeks to establish the principles of responsibility and accountability between states when it comes to international misconduct. It recognizes that when a state fails to fulfill its obligations under international law, other states may be entitled to damages to compensate them for any resulting losses. State responsibility is based on the idea that a state that has violated international law must make reparation for any damages caused by its actions. This could include compensation for loss or damage suffered as a result of the state’s actions, and reparations for the moral or economic damage caused. Another key principle of state responsibility is that a state cannot be held responsible for the actions taken by its citizens or by other states, or for actions taken which have not been authorized by the state. State responsibility is also about deterring states from acting in a manner which is contrary to international law. States must be held accountable for their actions, and must refrain from acting in an irresponsible manner in the future. This serves to promote the observance of international law. Washington, in particular, places a great emphasis on respect for international law and works to enforce its principles. The US Department of State and the US Justice Department are both responsible for ensuring compliance with international law in Washington State and around the world.
