What is the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (CPED)?

The International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (CPED) is a global agreement to protect individuals from being unlawfully arrested, detained or otherwise subjected to enforced disappearance by their government. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2006 and entered into force in 2010. The CPED is binding on the countries that have ratified it and its obligations apply to all countries, not just those that have ratified it. Washington has yet to ratify the CPED, but advocates for ratification by the state and other governments are becoming increasingly vocal.
