What is the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)?
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is an intergovernmental organization based in Washington, D.C., and established in 1944 to promote the safe and orderly development of international civil aviation throughout the world. The ICAO works to ensure the uniform application of international civil aviation standards and regulations, and facilitates international air travel through safe and efficient air navigation services. The ICAO also regulates safety in international air operations and assists countries in the development of their civil aviation capabilities. In addition, the ICAO assists in the development of international agreements on air transport matters, including the negotiation of air services agreements and the monitoring of compliance by states with the obligations of those agreements. The ICAO also oversees the coordination of international aircraft accident investigations to ensure that lessons learned from such incidents are incorporated into air navigation practices. Finally, the ICAO is involved in research and development of new technologies designed to improve aviation safety and efficiency.
