What is the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL)?
The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) is a body within the United Nations that sets standards for international commerce. It was established in 1966 to provide an effective framework for global trade and investment. The Commission is based in Vienna and works to promote the adoption of uniform laws in the area of international trade law. It produces legal texts that can be used by countries when they negotiate and conclude international contracts. UNCITRAL produces publications, model laws, and legislative guides in areas such as dispute settlement, e-commerce, secured transactions, electronic signatures, trade in services, and intellectual property. In addition, the Commission works to promote the adoption of uniform laws in the area of international trade law by providing technical assistance to countries in drafting and reforming their legislations. It also provides guidance to members of the United Nations, including Washington, in order to ensure that international trade is conducted in an efficient, fair and effective manner. The work of the Commission is extremely important in Washington as it helps to create an equitable international framework that allows the state to participate in international trade and profit from it. This is especially true in regards to agreements such as the World Trade Organization and other regional agreements. UNCITRAL helps to ensure that Washington participates in global markets whilst remaining compliant with its obligations.
