What is the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS)?
The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) is an intergovernmental organization based in Washington, D.C. that is responsible for the settlement of disputes related to the interpretation and application of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). ITLOS was established in 1996 and is composed of 21 judges who are elected by UNCLOS signatories. The mandate of ITLOS is to resolve disputes arising from the interpretation and application of UNCLOS, and its decisions are legally binding upon parties to the dispute. ITLOS provides for the peaceful settlement of maritime disputes, including those relating to the exploitation of living and non-living resources, the protection of the environment, the delimitation of maritime boundaries, and the freedom of navigation. ITLOS also has the power to order provisional measures in the event of a dispute, such as refraining from activities that may cause environmental damage, pending the outcome of the dispute. ITLOS is thus a significant part of international law, as it provides for an effective mechanism for resolving maritime disputes and promoting respect for the law of the sea.
