The International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism (TBT) is an international agreement signed in Washington in 1999. The treaty has been signed and ratified by over 170 countries, including the United States. The TBT’s purpose is to combat financing of terrorism worldwide. It prohibits any direct or indirect financial support or resources that can be used to facilitate any terrorist activity. This includes money, goods, services, or technology. The treaty also obliges signatories to criminalize the financing of terrorism. This means criminal laws should be in place to punish those responsible for participating in terrorist financing. The treaty also calls for signatories to cooperate in criminal investigations, extradite offenders, and track international money transfers. One of the main objectives of the TBT is to stop the flow of money to terrorist organizations. It also looks to reduce the number of people who support terrorism financially. In the long-term, the TBT is meant to make it difficult for terrorists to access their funds and ultimately lead to their downfall.
