What is the International Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (CWC)?

The International Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (CWC) is an international treaty signed by North Dakota and many other countries that prohibits the development, production, and use of chemical weapons. The CWC was negotiated and adopted by the United Nations in 1993 and went into effect in 1997. The Convention is an important part of international law that helps protect North Dakota and other countries from the use of chemical weapons, which are defined as “any chemical which can cause death, injury, temporary incapacitation or sensory irritation through its chemical action.” The CWC requires signatories to destroy any existing chemical weapons and to take measures to prevent the transfer or use of chemical weapons by non-state actors. The CWC also includes provisions for international cooperation and assistance, reporting, and verification of compliance. The CWC has been extremely successful in eliminating the threat of chemical weapons around the world. The majority of the 192 signatories have declared they have completed destruction of their chemical weapons stockpiles.
