What is the International Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction (CWC)?

The International Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction (CWC) is an international treaty signed by 193 countries, including Georgia. It is the most comprehensive international agreement to outlaw the use of chemical weapons. The CWC bans the development, production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons. It also requires all countries to destroy their existing stocks of chemical weapons and any facilities that have been used to produce or stockpile them. The CWC also includes provisions for international cooperation and assistance. This includes the International Cooperation and Assistance Division (ICAD), which helps countries meet their obligations under the CWC by providing expert advice, training and assistance. The CWC also requires all signatory countries to submit annual declarations and periodic reports on their production and stocks of chemicals and chemical weapons. The countries also have to submit information on any transfers of chemicals and chemicals-related technology. The CWC creates a verification regime to ensure compliance with its provisions. This includes inspections and on-site visits by officials from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The OPCW also runs the Technical Secretariat which oversees the implementation of the treaty. The CWC is a vital tool in the fight against the use of chemical weapons, and its provisions are regularly enforced by the OPCW. By signing and ratifying the CWC, Georgia is showing its commitment to end the use of these dangerous weapons.
