What is the International Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CG)?
The International Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CG) is an international law that was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. Its purpose is to prevent and punish genocide, which is defined as any of the following acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group: killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions of life that lead to the physical destruction of the group, and preventing births within the group. Under the Convention, genocide is a punishable international crime for which individuals, regardless of their nationality, can be prosecuted. All countries that ratify the Convention are obligated to criminalize and punish genocide perpetrators, and cooperate with each other in investigations and prosecutions. The Convention is applicable in the nation of Georgia, and has been in force since 1990 when it was ratified by the Georgian government. The Convention is part of the Georgian Criminal Code and all violations of the Convention are considered criminal acts which can be punished domestically as well as at the international level. In Georgia, those found guilty of committing genocide will face long-term imprisonment or life sentences.
