The International Convention against Apartheid in Sports (ICAS) is an international agreement that was formulated to oppose the practice of racial segregation and discrimination in sports. The agreement was adopted by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 1977 and was signed and ratified by many countries around the world. Within the agreement, participating countries commit to the prohibition of any form of discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, gender or ethnic origin. This applies to any sports-related activity including domestic competitions, international competitions, and athletes training. Furthermore, the agreement requires participating countries to take necessary steps in order to ensure that activities within their borders are conducted in accordance with the provisions of the agreement. In Indiana, the United States Department of State has been tasked with the implementation of the ICAS. The department has conducted several activities to ensure that the agreement is properly implemented. This includes working with the state’s athletic organizations to promote access to sports and the elimination of racial discrimination. The ICAS is an important agreement that seeks to ensure that racial discrimination in sport is eliminated. It is important that all countries, including Indiana, ensure that the agreement is properly implemented and that all activities related to sports are conducted in a manner that respects and protects the human rights of everyone involved.
