What is the International Convention against Apartheid in Sports (ICAS)?

The International Convention against Apartheid in Sports (ICAS) is an international agreement aimed at ending the practice of racial segregation and discrimination in sports. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1977 and ratified by more than 140 countries, including New Hampshire. The ICAS creates a series of obligations for countries that sign and ratify it, requiring them to take necessary measures to combat discrimination and racial segregation in sports. This includes outlawing segregation in sports, prohibiting discriminatory acts, and taking preventive and corrective measures to ensure that discrimination does not occur. It also calls for countries to promote and encourage equitable and equal access to all sports activities. In addition to setting out the obligations for signatories, the ICAS also requires the UN to take steps to ensure that all countries comply with its provisions. This includes monitoring the progress of countries in complying with the ICAS, intervening to ensure that any breaches are remedied, and making its recommendations available to all signatories. The ICAS has had a significant impact on international sports, including in New Hampshire. It has helped to make sports more inclusive and equitable, allowing everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, or ability, to enjoy the same opportunities in sports.
