What is the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)?

The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is an international human rights treaty that works to eliminate discrimination against women and ensure the protection of their basic human rights. The CEDAW is composed of 30 articles which are designed to eliminate discrimination against women, a problem which is still pervasive in many countries around the world. The CEDAW is seen as one of the most important international treaties, as it seeks to end all forms of discrimination against women, from unequal rights in the home to workplace discrimination. This treaty specifically targets gender discrimination in areas such as education, health care, employment and political participation. It also provides for the protection of women’s rights to equal pay in the workplace and to protection from sexual harassment in the workplace. The CEDAW has been ratified by 189 countries, including the United States and Colorado. Colorado is committed to the principles outlined in the CEDAW and has passed legislation designed to end discrimination against women in the state. In addition, the Colorado state government has enacted a number of measures to ensure that the rights of women are protected and that they have equal access to education, health care, employment and political participation.
