What is the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)?

The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is an international agreement created to protect women’s rights. CEDAW was adopted by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 1979 and became an international law in 1981. The agreement outlines the rights of women and what governments must do to ensure equal rights and opportunities for all women. CEDAW is comprised of 30 articles that outline a broad range of rights for women. These include the right to access health care, education, employment, and legal rights, as well as the right to be free from violence and discrimination. CEDAW also calls for an end to harmful cultural practices, such as child marriage and female genital mutilation. Additionally, CEDAW promotes women’s participation in the political process and encourages equal representation in decision-making. In Florida, CEDAW is implemented through laws, policies, and programs that protect women’s rights in the state. These include anti-discrimination laws, laws that protect victims of domestic violence, and programs that work to prevent gender-based discrimination. By implementing CEDAW, Florida is helping to ensure that all its women and girls have the same rights and opportunities as men and boys.
