What is the International Law of the Sea?
The International Law of the Sea (also known as the law of the sea or marine law) is a set of rules and regulations which govern the use of the oceans and the activities taking place on them. This law is designed to ensure that the ocean is used responsibly and in a manner which preserves its natural state. The International Law of the Sea was created through a series of United Nations conventions. The primary focus of the International Law of the Sea is to address the use of territorial waters, the economic use of the ocean, and the legal protection of the ocean environment. It also outlines procedures for marine scientific research, fishery management, and marine pollutants. The law is designed to ensure that the ocean is used responsibly, and that no one nation has unfair access to any part of the ocean. In Florida, the International Law of the Sea is enforced by both state and federal entities. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is responsible for setting regulations in order to implement the International Law of the Sea in state waters, while the United States Coast Guard is responsible for enforcing the law in U.S. waters. In addition to setting overall standards, the International Law of the Sea also serves as a framework for resolving disputes between nations over the use of the oceans. This helps to ensure that conflicts over the use of the ocean are managed in a fair and equitable manner.
