What are the responsibilities of an insurance adjuster?
An insurance adjuster is responsible for assessing claims for damages or losses caused by insured events such as accidents, fires, and natural disasters. Adjusters typically work for insurance companies, and their primary role is to determine how much the insurance company should pay for a claim. Adjusters must review the terms of the insurance policy, evaluate the extent of the damage or loss, and decide what portion of the claim should be paid. They also prepare and submit reports with their findings and recommendations. To come to an accurate conclusion, they may need to conduct field investigation or research. Additionally, an adjuster will negotiate with claimants to reach a settlement agreement, or advise the claimant on the best process for filing a lawsuit if a settlement cannot be reached. Adjusters must maintain impartiality and adhere to applicable state regulations while they negotiate or mediate. In Washington, all adjusters must be licensed by the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner. A license must be renewed annually and only those with a current license may act as an insurance adjuster. Adjusters must provide proof of errors & omissions insurance and guarantee surety bonds before a license may be issued. They must also complete continuing education courses each year to maintain their license.
