What is an insurance binder?

An insurance binder is a document used in New Mexico that serves as a short-term evidence of insurance coverage. It is typically issued by an insurance company, agent, or broker in order to provide proof of insurance for a specific policy period until the policy is issued. An insurance binder can include details such as the name and address of the insured; type of insurance coverage; amount of coverage; policy term; insurer’s name and contact information; and the date the policy was issued. This document allows the insured to have proof of coverage during the transition until the policy is finalized. Insurance binders can be used in many different ways in New Mexico. For example, a mortgage company may require a binder for an applicant’s home insurance before allowing the loan to be finalized. Homeowners may also use a binder to make sure they are covered once they receive their policy. Businesses may also use insurance binders to provide proof of insurance to their customers. It is important to remember that insurance binders are temporary documents. The actual policy must eventually be obtained in order for the insured to be protected for the full duration of the coverage period. If the coverage is canceled before the policy is issued, then the binder is also considered canceled. Therefore, it is important to consider the terms of the binder to make sure that you are adequately covered.
