What are the legal requirements to form an insurance company?
In the state of Washington, the Legal Requirements to form an Insurance Company are regulated by the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC). To begin the process, prospective insurers must submit an application to the OIC. This includes a detailed business plan, along with a list of all of the officers and directors of the company. Additionally, the application must include an endorsement from a qualified surety or fidelity bond company, which shows that the company has the necessary financial resources to meet the minimum requirements for an insurance company in the state. Along with the application, the insurer must submit a filing fee, as well as a Certificate of Authority. A Certificate of Authority is a statement from the state of Washington which shows that the insurer has met all of the requirements to legally operate in the state of Washington. Once these documents are reviewed and accepted by the OIC, the insurer is officially authorized to do business in the state of Washington. It is important to remember that the regulations, requirements and fees for forming an insurance company can change, so it is important to stay up-to-date with the latest information. Additionally, the insurer must follow all existing insurance laws and regulations, in order to remain in good standing.
