What is an investment law?
An investment law is a set of regulations in Washington State that are designed to protect investors from fraudulent investments. These laws cover a range of activities, including the licensing and registration of securities, the disclosure of information to investors, and the prohibition of certain types of investments. The laws make sure that those selling securities comply with certain standards, so that investors get accurate information that’s not misleading. When companies make an offering or sale of securities, they must file a disclosure document with the Washington Secretary of State. This document must include information regarding the company’s financial condition and operations. In addition, the laws regulate the activity of investment advisors, who provide advice to clients, as well as brokers and dealers, who are involved in the sale of securities. Investment advisors must obtain a license from the state and must be registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Brokers and dealers who sell securities must register with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Investment law also identifies activities that are not allowed, such as insider trading, where individuals with inside information use that information to make financial gains. There are also rules against fraud, in order to protect investors from companies making false statements or promises in order to get an investor to buy a security. These laws are in place to help protect investors from potential harm. It is important for everyone to understand the rules of investment law, so they can make informed decisions when considering investments.
