What is the difference between venture capital and private equity?

Venture capital and private equity are two different types of investments. Venture capital is investment that is provided to companies in exchange for equity, usually either in the form of convertible debt or preferred stock. This type of investment is usually provided to startup companies or small businesses that have potential for growth. Private equity, on the other hand, is an investment made into mature companies. Private equity investments are usually provided in exchange for an ownership interest, and can be used to fund things such as acquisitions, mergers, expansions, and restructuring. Venture capital investors tend to focus on companies with a potential for fast growth, while private equity investors typically look for more established companies that are in need of capital for certain projects. Venture capital is often provided to companies that do not have the creditworthiness to obtain larger investments from a bank or other financial institution. Private equity investments generally come from private individuals, pension funds, and mutual funds. In Texas, investment law dictates that venture capitalists must be registered with the state, and must have an in-depth understanding of the risks associated with high-growth businesses. On the other hand, private equity investors can be more freely assessed, though they are also subject to state and federal regulations.
