What is a software copyright?

A software copyright is a form of intellectual property law in Virginia that protects the rights of software developers and owners. It grants them exclusive rights to the software they create, as well as provides protection from infringement. This means that if someone creates a software product, they can copyright it, and nobody else can use, copy, or modify that software product without their permission. When someone registers their software with the United States Copyright Office they receive two legal protections. One is referred to as a copyright, which gives the creator exclusive rights to how the software is used and distributed. The other is referred to as a patent, which protects the creator from someone else using their software without their permission. Software copyrights also have certain limitations, such as the duration of the copyright. A copyright will generally last for the life of the creator, plus seventy years. After that, the software copyright is considered to be public domain and may be used, copied, and modified freely by anyone. Software copyrights are important protection for software creators, as they can protect their own original ideas and creations, while also allowing them to benefit financially from their work. Without this protection, it would be easier for another person to copy and use the software without giving credit to the original creator.
