What is an invention?
An invention is any new or improved product or process that is created through the use of creativity and/or scientific knowledge. It can be a physical object, a process, a machine, a source of energy, or even something intangible, like a new business concept. In New York, inventors must register their inventions with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to protect their intellectual property rights. Those rights ensure that the inventor is compensated for the use of their invention and that they are able to exploit their invention commercially. This process is known as patenting. Patents provide inventors with exclusive protection for their inventions for a certain period of time. During this time, other people or companies are not able to use, reproduce, or sell the invention without the inventor’s permission.
