What is the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)?
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is an international organization that works to promote and protect intellectual property (IP) rights around the world. Established in 1967, WIPO’s primary goal is to develop a balanced and effective international IP system that benefits all countries, both developed and developing. In Mississippi, WIPO works with the Intellectual Property Division of the Secretary of State’s office to help protect IP rights, such as copyrights, trademarks, and patents. WIPO provides services to inventors, authors, businesses, and other IP owners in order to help them register and obtain protection for their IP. This includes online filing services for registering and renewing copyrights on patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. WIPO also works with governments to help develop laws and regulations that will help protect IP rights. For example, the international Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) is administered by WIPO and is based on several multilateral treaties that introduce a unified patent filing system. Overall, WIPO is an important ally to Mississippi in protecting intellectual property. By working with the Intellectual Property Division, WIPO provides access to a global system that ensures that IP owners in Mississippi have their rights recognized worldwide.
