What is a license?

A license is a legal form of agreement that grants someone permission to use property that is owned by another person or entity. In the context of intellectual property law in North Carolina, a license is an agreement made between the owner of a piece of property and someone else to give that other person certain rights to use that property for a limited purpose. This agreement can be made to grant permission for the use of a song, a design, or other intellectual property, which is usually protected under copyright law. When a license is granted to a person or entity, the license holder can usually use the property for the purpose agreed upon without fear of being sued by the owner of the property. A license can also be used to regulate how the property is used or to create a fee for using the property. In many cases, a license can be exclusive, meaning that the licensee is the only one who can use the property during the term of the license, or it may be non-exclusive, meaning that other people can also use the property. In North Carolina, licenses are often used to protect creativity and ownership rights of intellectual property. For example, a photographer who takes pictures of a special event or a businessperson who designs a logo may use a license to protect the property they created. This license gives them the right to control how the property is used and to receive a fee for the use of the property.
